#65: George Stephenson (1781-1848)

George Stephenson (1781-1848) is considered the "Father of the Railways."

He built the world's first public railway to use steam locomotives. This crucial achievement helped to bring about the Industrial Revolution because it made the transport of raw materials and manufactured goods less costly and more reliable.

Stephenson also had the foresight to realize that the individual railway lines would eventually join and would, therefore, require the same gauge. The standard gauge used throughout the world is due to him.

As a contributor to the Industrial Revolution, Stephenson helped to make life better and even possible for millions of people.
